How to Raise Confident, Motivated Kids (or Coach them up)

Tip 1: Wins Along the Way.

Get clear on the big dreams, and then celebrate small achievements along the way. Celebrate effort, celebrate thoughtful debates even when you don't agree. As long as it moves the needle in achieving the dream, living their legacy, and positive contribution to the world... celebrate that and watch confidence explode!

Tip 2: Get Very Clear on What You Want to Be Known For.

Your child's definition of success and fulfillment is different than your own. Celebrate that! Help them articulate and define their own dreams, their own personality expressions, and their own version of contribution to the world with their own unique talents. Help them define what they want to be known for, what they stand for. Teach them to use that as a foundation going forward with every decision they make. Their choices will either serve that dream and legacy they want to create, or it won't.

Tip 3: Put in the Reps.

Just like in sports, your teens will gain confidence the more they try things. The more often you let them decide, let them fail and learn, let them try and succeed, and so on... the more context and confidence they will gain. This autonomy and action will drive motivation up because they will be fueled by their own experiences and self-created opportunities!

Tip 4: Prepare!

Proper preparation is a great tool for confidence building. Instead of asking your teen if they are nervous just prior to the big moment, or barking orders to practice or do homework... help you teen by asking questions like: What things can you be doing right now to make your life easier tomorrow? Is there anything you can do today to help make tomorrow more fun, easier, or more efficient? Have you fueled your body and brain today so you can feel better and perform better? (hydration and nutrition) Do you want to teach me what you learned today as if I needed to take that test tomorrow?

Bonus! Tip 5: Take Responsibility for the Real Meaning of Things.

It's not happening to you, it's happening for you. You. have far more control than you give yourself credit for, so teach your kids to reflect confidently on the circumstances and obstacles in front of them. How will this make them stronger, wiser next time? Isn't it wonderful that challenges can be the greatest springboards in life! Teach them this perspective and it becomes very powerful in both motivating and building confident kids!
